30 days, 30 bands – #7 Oxo Foxo

“When you have to choose between the truth and the legend, choose the legend.” –Tony Wilson 2008. September: “Last of the Summer?” “Yes, that’s the name. Anything wrong?” “Just wondering if it had anything to do with Last of the Summer wine?” “You know that show?”  “Hey, I’m from Mexico, not the moon…’sides, I told you I know of TISWAS!” I had the ticket. … Continue reading 30 days, 30 bands – #7 Oxo Foxo

Lollygagging in Sheffield – November gig list

It’s been a while since we’ve done one of these – a combination of stress, fatigue and general lack of zest were some of the causes. Also, not being in Sheffield now, it’s hard to be “in the know”, even if well-meaning insiders are kind enough to send us their stuff. This one is for you. This also is dedicated to the people of Screaming … Continue reading Lollygagging in Sheffield – November gig list

Heeeeeeey, it’s me, your friendly neighbourhood listings editor, @Orestes_yipee. There was no preview on May because I was on strike. ATTICA! ATTICA!

Gig: Scaramanga Six, Cut Your Wings + Great Deeds

I swear I’m not making this up, but I had a feeling this gig was going to be something weird. It wasn’t the fact that I made a rather good pollo con mole for tea (see above picture) but the fact that a few minutes before I left the house, a horse-drawn carriage just passed by my house. Waddle, waddle, waddle, it’s Springtime for Hitler and Germany…no, wait, that’s from The Producers, the best pisstake musical ever. After Spamalot. I think. Hey, that’s no ordinary rabbit.

Right-o, no more Percol Americano for me. It’s off to Tamper Coffee to write this excuse for a preview. Continue reading “Kvetching in Sheffield – #1”

Gig: Low Duo, My First Tooth & Screaming Maldini @ The Harley

The marrying of imagination and reality is always a rocky one. The utopian images in your head will always look like what Sir Kenneth Hugo Adam would do to please Sean Connery, but the dystopian vicissitudes of real life sometimes yield a canvas scrawled by a crayola wielding maniac who sniffed too many grammes of bath salts. Continue reading “Gig: Low Duo, My First Tooth & Screaming Maldini @ The Harley”

Blessa, Fear of Men & Veronica Falls at The Harley

SONY DSC

It doesn’t get much better than this, a trio of great bands, presented in the stage that occupies the funky joint called The Harley. Three bands playing music from genres that will not cater for a crisp, clear cut sound, but an expansive sound with heavy brushings of reverb, fuzz and overdrive.
