Wake up to… New Ghost – The Wolf of Allendale

What was the last thing you dreamed? The one I had yesterday left me confused. I was in a strange hotel/casino, supposedly in Paris. My plane was due to leave in 8 hours, so my mother said I should look around the place and kill some time. The casino had a water slide running everywhere, with drops, rises, loop the loops, and neon light everywhere. I jumped without hesitation and people could stop anywhere in the water slide, hang or just go as fast as possible. A large pool awaited at the end of the slide. I got out fast as I didn’t want to miss the train. Just by the exit of the pool, a strange lady told me that I had to wait two hours sat on a vinyl chair. Then and only then I would be allowed to leave. The alternative: play one of the games available (baccarat, blackjack, Texas hold ’em). She then suggested, her face morphing into a black void, to just “wait it out.”

And then I woke up.

‘The wolf of Allendale’, according to New Ghost, is a fever dream, made from gorgeous, expansive atmospheres, and stream of consciousness. For some reason, this nightmare I had kept reappearing in my head as the song switched from its pop-heavy intro into dark territories. I swear I could hear the old synth used by the BBC radiophonic to announce the presence of a Sea Devil!

Take a slice of James Iha’s musical contributions to classic Smashing Pumpkins, add a dash of Mew’s sentimental lyrics, and top it with the right amount of synth. That is ‘The Wolf of Allendale’, a taste of New Ghost‘s chosen path. It will come with rises and drops, it might end with pensive melancholy, but it was a ride.
