Angry blues and more from the UK (a mysterious package).

THE HOPE EXPLOSION – DEMO

This is one of the strangest but beautiful things that could ever happen to me.

This morning I woke up, yes, as always, and found a package on my door, sender unknown. I first felt at unease when reading the big red inscription this carton box had glued on white paper and red marker: WARNING! IT’S FUCKING LOUD!! The first thing that stroke me as surprise was: “ok, I am in Mexico City, how calm should I be if I receive boxes with warnings in English!?”. The second and most important was: “Oh, is it really THAT LOUD?”

I could not wait, this LOUD word made me feel this unusual package could bring something more than doubt to my senses. I unwrapped it: “From the U.K with love”, no doubt; I got a CD again with the LOUD word in red (Ok, I get it! It is loud!, could you stop writing loud, please? “The Hope Explosion”, then played it, and the first beat I listened to…

My MP3 Player displayed the track name as ‘Talk is cheap’. My poor bass guitar “Patricio” went out tune by itself with the first notes of this song, that warning was not there without a reason, indeed! Angry Blues! A strong “bluish” basis, mad guitars (the son of Blues) and bass sound chasing, with a hint of good old 70s psychedelic feeling; that will be THE song I would sincerely dedicate to someone under such context!

The second song: ‘Bored & Broken Hearted’. If that is being broken-hearted, I want to feel like that all of the time! Blues continues, at this point I closed my eyes and enjoyed the last-accentuated note riff, then an amazing change in tempo to slow, may I say again, a little 70s influence too? Amazing bridge with a brilliant drum, like those music school drumrolls only the teacher could play, then fast again. Wicked!

What was next? These two songs are so unpredictable. I could not wait! ‘Pin Down the Detail’. Great! More “discreet” anger, distortion, all wrapped for you in a flying sensational atmosphere. This is the feeling unbelievable news may cause physically: knees trembling, goose bumps, body tickling, no strength in your hands. After catatonia, LETS HEADBANG! A progressive, slow riff that would make you want to go out and perceive the outside world in slow motion. No more blues rhythm, but a rock watermark reading “The Hope Explosion”.

Then…. what? The last track? No more? My trip without funny mushrooms, cacti or green stuff was over. Pure endorphins for free… Yeah! That was fucking LOUD!

If you are searching for a fresh, ORIGINAL, and LOUD experience then you better pay attention to this U.K. band. They just nailed it for their band name: it is just a big explosion that gets you in a good mood, and their music is not just catchy, each note makes you go deep into their own universe, the feature I love the most from bands and musicians in general: CREATIVITY!

As a final note, I strongly believe this Demo really makes you ask for more.

Ok, just and just another final (and rather personal) note. Thanks to whoever sent this package to me, it was just amazing!

Cheers,

Tonan.

About the author: Tonan wonders why aren’t more bands like this in Mexico. Also, she had her tail bone dislocated (unrelated to this review) and thinks translations are warping her brain as much as the new itunes update warped her iphone.
