By the mid 80s, the AOR and MOR bands of the 70s had two choices: adopt to a mellower sound or face extinction. REO Speedwagon on their eleventh album, Wheels Are Turnin’ finds the band as far as possible from Dead at last, the proggy closer to their debut album.

And it’s not a band thing. Bands should evolve and progress if they want to keep moving on. If not, set an expiration date and move on to other stuff.

I do’ wanna know was the lead single of Wheel are Turnin’ and didn’t have legs. Its place in the REO Speedwagon canon is pretty much obliterated by the second single, which was the ubiquitous Can’t fight this feeling, a well-polished ballad that adorned many a mixtape in the 80s.

Slightly seen as a return to their previous sound, perhaps I do’ wanna know fizzled career on the charts had to do with audiences no longer wanting anything 70s tinged in an era of Reagan and synths. Can’t fight this feeling is pretty much the antithesis and in hindsight, it was the obvious lead single.

I love I do’ wanna know mostly because I loved the video as a kid. A mischievous ruffian is the bugbear of his family until he gets fried by a toaster and encounters the band members as both God and angels and Satan and demons. I’d like to think a young Dave Grohl watched this non-stop and decided to do goofy videos for the majority of the Foo Fighters’ career.
