Guadalupe Plata has many albums, all named Guadalupe Plata. Their bass player performed with a washtub bass. They have a song about a kitten. Their songs range from Psychobilly to Blues to Flamenco. They are a spectacular live show and they might be deranged.

Only one part of the previous paragraph is a lie.

What is true is that every single time I’ve seen Guadalupe Plata live, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed their desert-tinted, acid-dropping music. Lyrics aren’t verbose, but tell a full story.

I stumbled upon Guadalupe Plata by sheer happenstance. Late night YouTube session while trying to catch some sleep on a rainy night in Sheffield. The wind smashed waterdrops towards the ceiling window. Then a stop motion video played and the song was simple but catchy. It was a fan edit of Lorena, from Guadalupe Plata (2011), mixed with Vicious Cycles, a short by Len Janson and Chuck Manville. The edit was a little dark but it fit Guadalupe Plata’s music quite well.

Just like Dave Hartley’s tribute to Weird Al Yankovic’s Hardware Store, Lorena is another example of a song without a video getting a small push in an ocean of algorithms. If you’re lucky enough, you might find your next fave song, just like I did with Lorena (and Hoops’ Gemini).
