The Wednesday Watch is Orestes P. Xistos’ weekly column. We do not align with its radical political beliefs, that include a wild theory about Lenny Kravitz left pinky, but Orestes delivers on time, with plenty of typos, and always includes jammie dodgers and wagon wheels on the christmas basket.
Hi, lovely people, specially our readers in Norway and Finland! I’m writing about Gregory and the Hawk and Bromheads Jacket. The fuck I ended up somehow back in 2010? Gotta tell my dad I love him and hug my dog. Or something like that.
Oh, yeah, reviews…
I’m offended. Affronted. Aggrieved. Someone already used compared Bromheads Jacket to The Streets and as a hack journalist, I felt robbed of a cheap comparison. So sod that, listen to ‘Juiced Up‘, where the hate for On the brain is ramped up to stratospheric levels… and then come back for this tremendous rocker, ‘The Grind’. As a working stiff (I only do the writing stuff on the side – no money here), I can identify with have just a couple of 2p coins (tuppencers?) and unwanted advances from burly men in starchy shirts. Last 30 seconds of the track, with Jono and Tim riffing as hard as they can, are brutal as they come, and it’s always cool to witness Joe Green do his stuff on drums. You can buy an EP of reworked tracks, and other merch on their website. No idea what the heck they are cooking up in Attercliffe…
Sigh and the song is over. No idea if there’s more incoming, but keep an eye out on Gregory and the Hawk’s bandcamp, check a few videoclips here, or even donate a few pesos over. Heck it, listen to her cover of Madonna‘s Material Girl. It’s beautiful. Low key one of the best voices in history.
Sharp lyrics hide under the guise of a catchy folk pop maquette. Case Oats finds a cathartic detour away from it all in ‘Nora’. My perspicacious minds has several theories of who is the real Nora, and what is actually happening. But the last time I expressed myself, HR called me. So instead I’m suggesting you pre-save Last Missouri Exit, which is out August 22nd on Merge Records. You know the drill. I’m glad that you are here now. 3:)
I’m not an uncle and I like this! If you have no idea what I’m on about, check the comments for the easy going ‘Elderberry Wine’, a fantastic single from Wednesday‘s upcoming album, Bleeds (out September 19th on Dead Oceans Records). Alt-country loveliness for the midweek slog, grab a stool, knock back a few bourbons and yell at the telly. What’s on? Sports, your former fave Brit sci-fi show, a reality show, whatever you like. Do catch them live if you can, we saw them last year at Pitchfork Fest and it was a rather good time.
‘The sofa’ finds Wolf Alice on a beautiful 70s alt-pop path. They saw a glimmering early morning golden sun at the trailhead and ventured, with little to no equipment, but a real feel for the ground. The expansive sound is captured by a slick but unintrusive production. The Clearing is out on August 22nd, so pre-order if you fancy more of this placer gustoso.
Hey, have you read out latest deluge of articles?
We had a review of Josie Riesman’s Ringmaster: Vince McMahon and the unmaking of America, a trippy nervous breakdown passing as a review of Just Like Heaven Fest, a hatchet job of a terrible HBO Max drama, and a loveletter to the latest release from one of Mexico’s best bands.
(you can close this tab now, nothing of worth follows)
DID YOU KNOW…There’s a little bit of land between Poland and Lithuania? That’s Kaliningrad. I was sippin’ on a proper brew (Yorkshire Tea) and wondered what in tarnation was going there. No flags? NOT ON MY WATCH
It’s an exclave from Russia, so technically Poland and Lithuania have kindersurprised (!!!!!) a whole country away from Glorious Mother Russia. боже мой!
It looks nice. It has a place called “honeymoon bridge” which isn’t an ugly piece of obtrusive stone like that abomination in Venice. In short: I MUST GO THERE. Dabai, dabai!
Oh, sorry, phew, for a minute there, I lost myself, I lost myself.
My name is Orestes “The P is for Parásito” Xistos and this was my singles column. Love y’all. Thanks for sharing these ramblings. Enjoy the music.
