(streaming – ‘Hex’)
When I was a teenager, I lived in the woods in a tent. I was a squatter and I enjoyed the nightly solitude. During that time in my life I had the most intense dreams I have ever had, maybe will never have.
Dreams of galloping horses, knights and storms. Dreams of forests crashing down and animals taking over. Dreams of the end and of the beginning.
My dreams were always so vivid I’d wake up still hallucinating shaking off imaginary mountain lions and the deathly grasps of banshees. These dreams gave me poetry and art, beautiful costumes and passionate love. I had long forgotten about these dreams, tucked them safely into my memories. Forgotten how to dance wildly and how to paint maniacally until the day i heard Disemballerina.
I first heard of this band when I bought a piece of art of one of the members, a xerox scanned dead bird in a gold frame. Later, after narrowly missing so many previous shows I finally found myself sitting on the floor of a dark and crowded bar huddling around a row of candles giddy with anticipation.
As the 3 musicians sat behind the flickering light, the room grew quiet. The cello starts slow and haunting, lulling you almost to sleep until a viola and guitar shake you awake. I found myself daydreaming of far off places, epic adventures and creaking forests.
Disemballerina is magic in its purest form, it is an ancient ritual, it is a battle scene and a birth. The beauty of it all, how something so simple- a cello, guitar and viola- could create something so awe inspiring is enough to bring me to tears. I went home inspired and sewed an entire collection of apocalyptic costumes.
I think with all of the technology and lights and noise we have fogotten something so primal and true inside of us. So rare it is to find something that speaks to that, draws it out and calls to it loudly.
You are left feeling like a wild animal, an adrenaline rush with only one fix. If you want to learn to lucid dream, listen. If you want to remember what its like to believe, listen. If you want to feel powerful and spiritual, listen. If you want to remember what it is like to feel free, listen.
