One fine seedy night at Club obLONG…

La Folie, obLONG + White Cat Black Cat @ The Washington.

The second edition of “Club obLONG” took place in The Washington. The point of Club obLONG is basically to get some bands together and jam for a while (and for free) to the regulars at The Washington.

Sounded like a good idea. And there were free badges too.

Starting up the night was La Folie, again in an acoustic mood, which strangely feels like a pretty good approach to their sound. Saw them like that during Tramlines 2009 and for a small stage like the one at The Washington, it works wonders. It’s nice to hear some familiar songs, like ‘Arachnophobia’, getting another side worked on them and although there were some very slight technical troubles, it was a pretty good set. The lads seemed to been having fun too.

obLONG took the stage and started to peddle their wares, playing some songs from their recently released EPs (see the links section to check them out on Spotify) and some new tunes. ‘The knife’ is a pretty nifty song, which was well paired with the cracker that is ‘Words’ and the thoughtful, introspective dirge that is ‘The disappointment’.

obLONG’s set was closed with the oldie but goodie ‘I am the noise’, a particular favourite to some fans (ok, me) and it sums up a lot fo the strengths of a live obLONG show: punchy rhythm section (can’t go wrong with a fuzz pedal in the bass), powerful vocals and some righteous guitar playing.

Then it was the turn of Black Cat White Cat. One of the members of the band has a past, so, let’s concentrate on the present, shall we? The sound of Black Cat White Cat is a strange beast to pin down. Equal parts rock and psychedelia, with just the right amount of attitude for this very new band.

Not much in the way of banter with them, but whatever they had to say, it was said on stage and, succinctly put: can I have some more?

Looking forward to Club obLONG 3: electric boogaloo.

About the author: “It’s a very seedy sound” a friend of mine said after the show referring to Black Cat White Cat. Couldn’t agree more
