It’s an obvious choice, and perhaps I could’ve gone for Lost in France (pre-surgery vocals) or It’s a heartache (with her gravelly, raspy voice we all loved), but I can’t lie, I’m a sucker for the Steinman-penned rock ballad.

Russell Mulcahy’s video is one for the ages. You can see how he cut his teeth directing and landed the Highlander gig. You can always tells when a video is directed by him due to its theatricality and power blue light and wind play. The location was well-loved for video directors, and you can watch The Cure (Charlotte Sometimes) and Alphaville (Forever Young) using it for their videos.

Steinman originally wanted to make a song about vampires and the line “turn around bright eyes” he’d used before. Realising he had his vampire song, Total Eclipse of the Heart was born, then re-used much later for his Dance of the Vampires musical.

Football players. Scantly dressed people. Flying choir boys. Those weird reflective eye effects, used so much in Doctor Who and then in The World’s End. Doors opening by themselves. As a kid, I always find the video eerie, but I would watch it anyways. I guess horror, when well made, can truly entertain you. There’s not much I can say than hasn’t been written, but since Bonnie Tyler’s passing, this song has been on my head day in day out. Rory Dodd’s vocals are the only ones that can match Tyler’s amazing vocals.

Oh, and that crescendo scale on the organ as Bonnie Tyler’s vocals shout “I really need you tonight”? Perfection.
