Jackson Browne often gets paired with The Eagles due to his cowriting credits on Doolin Dalton, James Dean, and the utterly perfect Take it easy.
No, really, that’s what I believe it’s the best song by The Eagles, no matter what you Lebowski quoting freaks repeat ad nauseaum.
Jackson’s own career is often overlooked, and it’s a damn shame, as he’s got quite a few hits. The man can carry a tune.
Running on empty has been featured in documentaries, shows, and movies. It’s a staple of the Americana jukebox and it’s thoroughly justified.
Part of Browne’s concept album about touring musicians, running on empty was written during the daily commute to the studio. Jackson Browne would always be low on gas, rarely bothering on fuelling up as the studio was near his gaff.
Forrest Gump flexed a carefully picked soundtrack and the inclusion of this hit was more than obvious, it was a necessity.
As much as I love the eagles, I always place Jackson Browne above. Always felt he’s got a wider range.
