I discovered Nick Drake because of Duncan Sheik. An interview from his Phantom Moon era mentioned Drake as an influence and I had to check him out.
I was obsessed with Pink Moon for a month or two. It was during a bout of unemployment, insomnia, and general depression. I would sometimes go and walk during the dead of night, directionless. Other times I would hop on my car and drive aimlessly.
I stopped after I read that’s what Nick Drake did before passing away. I go scared straight.
Horn is the ephemeral instrumental that starts my fave three song run in any album. It’s minimalist, full of sadness, and sets the stage perfectly for things behind the sun and know, two Drake tracks that never get the love they deserve.
I’m in a better state now and can heed the warning signs easily. Still, that minute or so from Horn reminds me of that era, saying “never again”.
