As I wrote yesterday about my experience as a kid with a 24 hour video channel, I had a nice memory pop up. David Lee Roth only existed as the wacky dude from Jump, a video I watched ad nauseam in both Tula and Tampico, as all my brothers and cousins were massive fans of Van Halen.
The California Girls video was ok, I guess, but it’s this cover of a medley composed of two jazz standards, Just a Gigolo and I ain’t got nobody, what truly clicked with me. I’m super easy with funny videos, and as far as I know, this is one of the first videos to feature parodies of other musicians, as Diamond Dave wreaks havoc on a studio. Boy George, Billy Idol, Cyndi Lauper, Willie Nelson, Michael Jackson, Mötley Crue, all get the protoFamily Guy cutaway treatment.
It’s a great song too, a cover that allows David Lee Roth to show off his vocals, while still reaffirming the wistful emotions of Louis Prima’s concatenation.
Today it’s Children’s day in Mexico, and people usually post old photos of when they were kids. I’ll reminisce with a video that always sends me back to my childhood.
