The Wednesday Watch is Orestes P. Xistos’ weekly column. We do not believe he is high enough, but don’t worry, he’s just one of them damn yankees.
Was that a power ballad reference? Well, I don’t wanna hear about it anymore and instead, I bring you these singles for your listening pleasure. All new-ish, all fresh-ish. I don’t care about release dates as long as they are 2025 singles. Read on!
It’s interesting how Reverend and the makers managesto deftly jump between genres. Once part of the indie spearhead forged in Sheffield, Jon McClure never stays in one colour of the musical spectre. This new Northern Soul/Crooning stage is quite a change, but fits perfectly. It was hinted on his last single, the lovelorn Late Night Phone Call -big up for campaign for Samaritans, they are lifesavers- that is now 8 months old. ‘Haircut’ is geared towards a dancing crowd, the ones you could see at working men’s clubs and dance halls. Leave it to Steve Bracknall to get the crowd worked up. Vicky McClure (no relation) has a fantastic voice, elevating this duet to rarefied layer. ‘Feel Free’ is the new single by Jeff Tweedy for his upcoming triple album, Twilight Override. A triple album? In this economy? The deceptively easy going rhythm goes through a plateau of overgrown bushes and tall trees. Breeze is warm, sun is bright, and although Autumn is incoming, you can still get your kicks around. But really, a triple album? What is Jeff Tweedy thinking?Go into debt by pre-ordering here.
Wishy’s newest EP came out in April. Do you think I care about the release date? Nay, I bring you sweet songs and celery sticks for your enjoyment. The sentimental groove Wishy dug for ‘Fly’ runs deep, and you although you pretend to look for a breaching point, you have no interest wasting your life on no man’s land. The album is already out, it’s a doozie and you can buy it on Bandcamp.
This is a wonderful surprise. Been reading quite a bit about Cloth and I’m happy to report the hype is believable. Dreamy but with both feet firmly gripping the soil below, ‘Pink Silence’ finds Cloth flinging their innermost desires. That buzzing drone is the sound barrier, truly broken, taking a few emotional walls built on its path. Pink Silence was released back in April, but it’s a beautiful album. Check it out on Bandcamp.
And that’s a wrap, lovely people. It’s quality, not quantity.
Love
Orestes P. “Coltrane” Xistos
