The bit that you skip #97: Icehouse – Electric Blue

All that time before I used MTV latino as a music discovery tool, my only source could be either the radio or whatever my family was listening to. Maybe a song from a movie or tv show, but that was seldom the case. The one radio station I used to listen to while doing homework was Azul 89, an easy listening station that had pop hits, and the odd MOR track.

Spent years without knowing who Icehouse were, but Electric Blue was a song with healthy representation on Azul 89’s programming. It wasn’t as mushy as the usual fare (Erasure) or rockier (Tears for Fears), it was an enjoyable of well-produced pop with a catchy chorus. Blame a certain member of Hall & Oates for that beautiful falsetto and the knack to make a memorable hook.

I’d always thought this song would play during a slow dance moment at a ball. Never happened to me. Hoped I would listen to it through the tinny speakers of a mall. Never happened. Perhaps during a moment of reflection while driving. No again. It’s weird, it’s such a perfect commercial track, but I can’t think of any time I’ve heard it on the while. Am I misremembering? Or is this a niche song that although well crafted, never broke big in Mexico?
