Singles: Fresh Snow, Tomorrow We Sail, Ali Koehler, Cave Birds, Late Night Fiction, Rarechild, Azitiz
Greetings, readers getting banned from a certain Sheffield dive bar after calling the owner a “bellend” (he/she deserved it, though, I REGRET NOTHING). Welcome to another edition of our “off again, off again, hey it’s on again!” single reviews column. Granted, some of them aren’t singles, but I liked them and made my stupid human slaves review ‘em. Mahalo.
This week’s singles come courtesy of Venom and Carnage, those two idiot symbiotes from Spiderman, and their recent foray into Benetton ads. What’s the deal with ‘em, yo?
Ah, singles, right:

“Who are these bands?” You might ask from your all-knowing chair (ergonomic-ah from ikea). Well, the names are attached. Give them a try. You might actually like them instead of buying another edition of Arcade Fire‘s The Suburbs (the Where’s Wally Edition).

Wake up to Dead Sons
It has been a hectic year for the people of Dead Sons. A couple of free songs (‘Berlin’, ‘Junk room’). a vinyl single (‘I am the Lord’) and several big name gigs, including performing opening duties for Arctic Monkeys at their homecoming gig at Don Valley Stadium.
How to cap it off? Well, releasing a brand new EP, Boom Booom, under the careful and everlasting gaze of Ross Orton.
We interviewed them recently (link) and here’s a video from of their newest song, ‘Shotgun woman’.

Tramlines 2011
Tramlines 2011.
Every year, the city of Sheffield goes into full party mode and hosts the Tramlines festival, a veritable smogarsbord of musical talents, packed venues and heat stroke incidents (some of them rather unfortunate).

A pink shade of pop
Screaming Maldini – Secret Sounds
That probably was the worst pun-passing-as-a-post-title this excuse for a website has tried to use. Sorry for that.
Anyhoos, music, yeah. Screaming Maldini, a band wearing all pink (allegedly) and making quite a racket both on record and live (cheapo plug) have just released (a couple of months ago) their European début, Secret sounds, a short EP (only four songs) full of mostly happy, sugary sweet pop that becomes as loud as grunge, but also as wistful as the dreamiest of dream pop.
Between the off-kilter lyrics (gotta respect the Kookaburra mentions, those birds rule!) and the instrumentation bordering into math rock territory (yeah, I called it), the frantic pace of these 4 tracks is a breathe of fresh air on a gloomy August night where the news are about fires in your third favourite city in England.
But let’s leave the horrid state of the world aside and let’s talk about this lovely band. ‘Secret sounds’ (a song that was included on last year’s Screaming Maldini and the Kookaburra) is a perfect choice for an opener. Like previously mentioned, it’s happy and sunshiney, but for a few moments you wonder if it’s a true state of euphoria or just your daily dose of Librium/Soma kicking your endorphins.
Ah, ‘The Silver Mountain’. I swear I’ve heard this one live (memories of Peace in the Park) and a wry smile comes to the memory of that day. Again, happy thoughts, a wall of sound approach (via voices) and loads of cool little sounds added to the mix (flutes, siren whistles, etc). The “pa-ra-pa-pa-ra-pah!” refrain makes me think of a thousand 70s pop songs mashed together and signalled to the future (via AM and spacio-temporal distortions).
But those two happy songs are only the line and sinker. The real hook here is the marvellous ‘Restless hearts and silent pioneers’, easily the real gem of this solid release. The pace is still brisk, but the amalgamation of voices and musical ideas is very organic. The ending is fantastic and will not spoil it for you.
Said ending segues into ‘The first raindrop’, which is Maldini back to their upbeat, syncopated
Questions abound after the 4 tracks of this EP: Who is Maldini and why is he/she/it screaming? What became of The Situationists? Is it acceptable to daydream driving through Baja California/Big Sur when you listen to ‘The first raindrop’? Why do they wear Mexican Pink clothes? Is this edition better than Screaming Maldini and the Kookaburra, their EP from last year? All possible inane questions padding up this review. Just giving into this EP of cool ditties. Worth your time. Catch them live too, they are always a hoot (and sometimes a holler).
Words: Sam (who else? Fucking spamming this place as of late)

Wake up to… Legend of the Seven Black Tentacles
Fuckshitdammit, I love this band. With a very experimental approach to music, an ever growing and changing roster of talent and with a vivacious live set, Legend of Seven Black Tentacles are a collective (more like a Gestalt, really) from Sheffield that love to squish genres together and create something that hasn’t been defined yet.
Mixing classical music, rap and some acid jazz, they released their EP Let’s begin now a few month ago (cheap-o plug – review) and were ruddy cool at Peace in the Park (cheapo plugo parte dos) and now are back into a cocoon, ready to evolve again.
Hope you enjoyed that one, there’s loads more at their Bandcamp. They’d better not stay out of the circuit for long or I will be unfaithful to them and go and cheat with Renegade Brass Band (who also rock live).

Firesuite – Gallery
A couple of time units ago, we got invited to take some photos of Firesuite on their natural state. Sadly, those photos got nicked by a garden gnome with a disposition to listen to Verdi and a well sharpened kebab knife.
Luckily, we caught them again with a couple of snares we set up. After chatting, escaping from a Revivalist music show (this part isn’t a fib) and a lot of ales (which they provided), we rocked the photoshoot again. Some rock climbing, a lot of music and excessive level messing followed.
The good people of Firesuite also have their newest album, You’re an ocean deep, my brother out on iTunes and Spotify today, too. Yes, this post is more of a plug than a photo gallery, but we did enjoy the album (review) and some of these photos are actually good. Some.

Wake up to… Billy Liar
Stream – ‘It starts here’
Billy Liar is an acoustic punk musician from Scotland that has been relentlessly working for the past years (four on the last count) to get his unplugged punk out there to the masses.
He’s recently toured Europe and is ready to continue gigging this year. Not only will he be playing at the Strummerville Campfire sessions (August 13/14), but also at Wickerman (July 22/23) and will release a single in Autumn before embarking on another European tour with fellow acoustic punk (and Strummerville cohort) Louise Distras.
So, you’ve heard one of his songs and if you want to find out more, check out his website. Booyah.

Wake up to… Steel Trees
Steel Trees are a band from The North, full of energy, a grunge distortion firmly stomped upon and the intensity of a trio of friends wanting to get out of a garage by any means necessary (excluding blue and orange portals, eff that noise).
They also have been doing some good opening duties to legends like Dinosaur Jr. (yeah), Dinosaur Pile-Up (ca-ca-cat attack!) and Turbowolf. They should find another dinosaur-related band to open up for and then you could have a dinosaur trilogy of power rock. But then again, I’m Catholic, so I’m a stickler for trinities.
Anyways, here’s the video for ‘Sick’.
Booyah, here’s some grungy rock for you to wake up, and if this doesn’t wake you up, dunno, I’ll find something else. In the meantime, check their bandcamp for the rest of the tracks of their EP, Gunk and catch them live at The Washington during Tramlines (Friday).

Singles review – Week of June 6
Lumiere – Almadoble
Brand new singles by this Mexican band, finding them on that deadly, uncharted ground of pop with strange existential lyrics about doppelgangers and the identity of the man on the other side of the mirror of your soul. It’s a tad short to really grow full wings and soar into something more, but it’s a good appetiser for their upcoming album. Chorus is as catchy as that flu that’s going around, but instead of making it feel like a smashed up egg, it makes you bob your head. Drink Pilsner lager with this one. – Quinto
Knesset – Steady
There’s some magic in Arizona, and it’s depicted too through dreamy and talented riffs that build shoegaze style.
This is KNESSET, who present their album ‘Coming of Age’ with their nostalgic, yet powerful single ‘Steady Hands’. What can we expect?: drums full of stamina and shades that will be better magnified through delicate guitar riffs mixed with some organs in the “dream” mode. Not enough? Just, listen to distorted guitars (the corner of your dream) and the voice; it all mixes and shapes a hidden place among the chaos of this world.
Just close your eyes and give yourself in to this KNESSET mood. -Tonan
Goldsoul – Blood red / Waiting a lifetime
New single by this band from Barnsley, rocking out some sludgy rock pop tunes that should sit better with a weather that isn’t as fidgety as the one we are suffering. Global warming my arse. ‘Blood red’ is on full overdrive and with that thumping Brit rock. Cool solo. B-side ‘Waiting a lifetime’ feels rockier (if that makes sense, I’ll give ya a quarter) a bass heavier, definitely the stronger of the two. Double shot. -Quinto
Baddies – Tiger Face
I’m still not sure if I even like Southend’s Baddies – they’re strangely commercial yet weirdly frantic/punky indie rock. I have to say I prefer other songs of theirs to this new single (from their forthcoming second LP). I don’t like the fluffy lyrics on this (halfway through the track suddenly everyone is ‘on an aeroplane’) which add to the sense of schizophrenic confusion throughout – frankly, it’s a bit bewildering for an old broad like me. One thing I do like is the sense of experimentation and the math-rock tinged bass and drumming on ‘Tiger Face’ which gives it that little kick of interest. As I said, I’m not sure if this was the right choice for a single but hey, worse things happen at sea (unless you’re living in Life of Pi, that is). – Misky.
